XGen Testbed Development

IDLab Ghent has started the development of a cutting-edge XGen testbed. The aim to establish a unique platform for research for the next-generation wireless technologies.

Part of the physical testbed architecture

Key features of the XGen testbed in Ghent:

  • 6G RAN with Cross-Tech O-RAN: Installed in the IIoT Lab (Industrial IoT Lab) alongside parts of the WiLab1 architecture, enabling a convergence between WiFi and cellular 6G for seamless communication.
  • AI-Driven Network Resource Optimization: The testbed has computing hardware installed to enable distributed AI systems to e.g. dynamically optimize network performance.
  • Integrated Sustainable Network Architecture: Environmentally-conscious design principles to promote energy efficiency.
  • Service-Based Architecture (SBA): Modern, flexible network architecture enabling diverse services in 6G environments.
  • W-TSN (Wireless Time-Sensitive Networking): Supporting ultra-reliable low-latency applications with precise timing control.
  • Flexible and Programmable Hardware: Supporting technology benchmarking and the ability to customize and specialize for demanding markets, trough programmable radio platforms.
  • Advanced Research Capabilities: Facilitating the exploration of emerging technologies such as intelligent edge computing and autonomous systems.
